Job Summary: The Commercial Underwriter will be responsible for underwriting and managing a portfolio of insurance products including Habitational, GL, Property, Package, and Contractors. This role requires a detailed-oriented professional willing to work in a fast-paced setting with strong analytical skills, keen sense of urgency, a customer service mindset and an understanding of the wholesale insurance market. The Commercial Underwriter will work closely with retail agents, insurers, and internal teams to develop and deliver competitive insurance solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Underwriting & Risk Assessment:
- Evaluate and underwrite new and renewal business for Habitational, GL, Property, Package, and Contractors insurance.
- Conduct thorough risk assessments, analyze exposures and loss history, determine eligibility and offer appropriate coverage, terms, and pricing to retail agents.
- Utilize company rating systems and automated rating systems to develop quotes.
- Maintain underwriting guidelines and procedures.
- Follow-up on open quotes to capitalize on opportunities.
- Recommend risk mitigation strategies and coverage enhancements
- Agent Relationships:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with retail agents.
- Provide exceptional customer service and support to retail agents.
- Answer agent questions on appetite and submission requirements.
- Educate agents on product offerings and underwriting guidelines.
- Opportunities to meet with agents in-person to strengthen relationships.
- Documentation and Compliance:
- Review quote documents, binders, invoices and endorsements.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation in underwriting and management systems.
- Team Collaboration:
- Collaborate with sales and marketing team to identify opportunities in the marketplace.
- Work closely with underwriters, claims professionals, and other internal teams.
- Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities.
- Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.
- P&C Agent’s license or willingness to obtain one in a timely manner.
- Prior experience in underwriting Habitational, GL, Property, Package, and Contractors insurance.
- Technical knowledge of insurance products, coverage forms, market conditions, and regulatory requirements.
- Experience in working with Microsoft Office 365 products.
- Customer service mindset with a focus on urgency.
- Ability to work independently.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with team members, retail agents and insurers.
- Demonstrated negotiation skills.
- Professional designations (CPCU, CIC, ARM, etc.) a plus.

Essential Functions of the Role:
- Timely process binders and endorsements for our underwriting staff.
- Quote, process, and manage renewal lists for different lines of business.
- Process cancellations, reinstatements, inspections, and order loss runs.
- Accurately create invoices as business is ordered.
- Create pending items for accounts that require more information.
- Manage and direct all incoming phone calls in a courteous, upbeat, and professional manner.
- Handle all claim reporting as necessary.
- Produce all new files as necessary and manage the mail functions of the office.
- Participate in or handle special projects, as needed.
Education/Experience/Skills:
- BA/BS degree is preferred. A business or technology-related degree is a plus.

Sales/Marketing – Entry Level Position

Over the next 5 years, we plan to expand our footprint with our existing customer base and venture into new uncharted territories for our organization. In order to make that happen, we need to hire bright, hardworking, motivated people with an entrepreneurial spirit.
This full-time, entry-level role consists of a 24-month training and development program that will prepare the participant to become an insurance sales professional. The focus of the training program will be to increase client activity (new submissions, quotes, and premium) by going into insurance agents’ offices and promoting our state-of-the-art web-based and telephone quoting systems.

Essential Functions of the Role
Driving new business from our existing customers by performing the following tasks:
- Conduct 20 in-person sales meetings a week to demonstrate web and phone quoting capabilities and set insurance retailers up on the web quoting system upon successful
- Weekly reporting of sales meetings that occurred and a detailed schedule of meetings for the following week.
- Timely follow-up and continuous communication with customers/prospects to take advantage of opportunities.
- Systematic prospecting and arranging meetings with potential new customers, and with customers that have not reached their potential.
- Identify and establish a relationship with the key agency contacts; making sure we are doing business with the right people in each operation.
- Work with the customer’s team to review activity to spot trends (both positive and negative) and address these trends immediately.
- Establish an active relationship with the Regional Sales Manager and regularly discuss strategy and tactics including sales issues, travel, and follow-up.
- Pursue continuing education and insurance designations/licenses as outlined in the training and development plan. This will require self-study.
Travel
- 80% of time is spent in the field visiting customers
- Occasional overnight travel required
- Candidate expected to attend a two-week insurance boot camp and participate in a two-day annual sales conference in Wayne, PA just outside of Philadelphia
